Over the last few weeks, we’ve had the privilege of hosting participants from the Health Sector Work Ready Program, offered by Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation. This initiative is designed to create a skilled workforce capable of delivering culturally sensitive, people-centred care. As part of the program, participants ‘hop on and hop off’ with various care providers across the Pilbara region, gaining diverse skill sets and valuable experiences. Among those who ‘hopped on’ at Embrace Healthcare are two inspiring individuals, Damika and Kerry, who have spent the past two weeks learning alongside our dedicated care team.
Damika, a vibrant 24-year-old from Karratha, joined the program out of curiosity and a desire to explore a potential career in healthcare. Drawn to helping others, particularly those with disability needs, she saw this as an opportunity to gain valuable insights into care delivery. While she’s still deciding whether to pursue a long-term career in the sector, her time at Embrace Healthcare has been eye-opening. Working closely with experienced professionals, Damika has developed a deeper appreciation for the impact that compassionate care can have on individuals and their families. Whatever path she chooses, Damika now has a solid foundation to guide her journey.
Kerry, a compassionate 47-year-old, has embraced the relaxed yet purposeful environment of Embrace’s workshops. Inspired by the care her aunt receives from Embrace, Kerry joined the program to make a meaningful difference in her community. Many of the clients she supports are part of her extended friends and family network, which makes her work all the more personal and fulfilling. Living in a region often challenged by “bad habits” such as alcohol and substance abuse, Kerry has seen the positive changes Embrace is making in the lives of people she knows.
Kerry recently shared her heartfelt feedback with the program coordinator, describing the Embrace team as “the long-lost family she has been waiting for.” She praised the team for being truly special and for the incredible work they do in supporting community members with disability and mental health challenges. Her gratitude reflects the genuine impact of the program and the care provided by Embrace Health.
With her sights set on securing a role at Embrace, Kerry is determined to be part of this transformation and bring hope, care, and support to those who need it most.Together, Damika and Kerry embody the spirit of learning, growth, and community that the Health Sector Work Ready Program aims to foster. We are thrilled to see them take their first steps towards making a lasting impact in the healthcare sector.
