Supported Independent Living (SIL)

A group home, or shared home, provides a supportive environment for a small number of individuals requiring assistance, offering more personalised support compared to larger aged care facilities. It operates under the Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) framework, focusing on the physical aspects of living arrangements, while Supported Independent Living (SIL) delivers personalised support for developing independence within this setting. Typically hosting up to three residents, group homes are designed for comfort, with support workers assisting in daily living tasks, ensuring an ideal balance of property suitability and care for NDIS participants.

Your SIL plan includes

Communal living

Communal living focuses on teaching individuals how to coexist harmoniously with others and emphasises the importance of sharing household responsibilities. It’s about creating a supportive environment where everyone understands their duties, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect. This approach not only enhances daily living skills but also promotes interpersonal growth, making communal living an enriching experience for those involved.

Household activities

Assisting with household activities includes helping with essential tasks like meal preparation, cleaning, and gardening. This support is aimed at ensuring a well-maintained living space, promoting a healthy lifestyle through nutritious meals, and keeping the home environment clean and orderly. It’s about making daily chores manageable and fostering a sense of accomplishment and well-being.

Everyday skills

Everyday Skills encompasses essential life skills aimed at fostering independence and social integration. It includes managing finances, ensuring individuals can budget and pay bills efficiently; developing social skills, crucial for building and maintaining positive relationships; and enhancing written communication, assisting with the understanding and completion of forms. These areas are vital for personal development, enabling individuals to navigate daily life confidently, manage their affairs effectively, and interact successfully with others in various social contexts.
